Aparna Ramaswamy is a licensed clinical professional counselor in Maryland & District of Columbia (LCPC / LPC), approved clinical supervisor (ACS), national certified counselor (NCC), and national board certified clinical hypnotherapist (NBCCH). Sessions are offered as in-person consultations, and video-conference. Each session can be individual, couple, family or group format.
Dr. Ramaswamy started her counseling career guiding people to overcome symptoms of depression, anxiety, attention deficit, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. She is trained in using Eye Movement Integration (EMI) to overcome phobias, PTSD and traumatic experiences. Her training as a SMART counselor informs her work in helping people manage addictive behaviors such as substance abuse, alcoholism and other compulsive behaviors. Her desire to include transpersonal aspects of psychotherapy led Dr. Ramaswamy into learning Reiki and Theta healing. Additional trainings such as neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) further strengthens her gift for motivating you to make changes – to learn and change how you think, feel and act.
At the first meeting, Dr. Ramaswamy will complete an intake assessment that involves the following:
Gathering background information that includes name, DOB, address, emergency contact, relevant medical & legal history, complete informed consent & other relevant insurance information
Asking questions to understand the nature of concerns & circumstances that you are facing
A diagnosis is offered along with recommendations for further services that may include medication assessment, in addition to counseling.
Dr. Ramaswamy’s interventions are cognitive & behavioral – she explains what you can do differently and how to make those changes. Her guiding style is caring, supportive and nurturing. While remaining honest she challenges you to step out of the situation, rather than staying in it by continuing the conversation about why there is a problem. Her outlook is that if something is not working, take control of your part in it and modify what you can, understanding how even a little change can shift and alter the situation dramatically.
When meditation is a recommended service, Dr. Ramaswamy includes you in weekly group meditation sessions. She uses relaxation techniques drawn from her hypnotherapy trainings to create a space of mindfulness and relaxed awareness. She teaches and guides meditation practitioners in breathing exercises dedicated to relieving the body of nervous and festering energies. Sound healing and intonation is interspersed in these initial preparatory stages. Once the meditator’s body and mind is ready to focus, specific melodies are used to create a deep meditative experience.
